County sees rate improvements in over half its schools, report says

Half the schools serving Wellington County have improved their rating or have remained the same based on the annual education performance report card produced by the Fraser Institute that was released in March.

In most data from the institute, 11 elementary schools serving the county either matched or exceeded their five year averages based on the report. In comparison, 11 were below their five-year averages.

Elementary school scores on the Fraser Institute’s report card are out of 10 and based on the results of tests administered by Ontario’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).

At elementary institutions the school’s overall rating is based on nine performance indicators measured through EQAO tests. The annual province-wide assessments measure the reading, writing and mathematics levels of Grade 3 and Grade 6 students in comparison to provincial curriculum standards.

Other performance indicators that go into an elementary school’s rating on the report card include the difference between male and female averages based on Grade 6 reading and mathematics scores as well as the percentage of students in the school whose scores didn’t meet provincial standards.

The report is based on 3,037 public and Catholic elementary schools in the province.

Scores were based on the 2013/2014 school year, as well as the school’s average performance over the last five academic years. The overall ranking for a specific school year is based on how the school rates in comparison to other schools in the province assessed on the report card.

Scores for elementary schools throughout the county are as follows (Note: not all local schools in Ontario were ranked due to incomplete information available to the Fraser Institute).
