County is set to plant its one millionth tree this Sunday at 1:30pm

The one millionth tree from Wellington County’s Green Legacy program will be planted at the Wellington County Museum and Archives, in an event coinciding with the annual Harvest Home Festival.

That festival runs from noon to 4pm, and admission is $2. The one millionth tree will be planted at 1:30pm, by political dignitaries and community volunteers. The county invites its community partners to join the celebration.

The county began planting trees in 2004 as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations. That year, it planted 150,000 trees and the program was so popular that county council decided to continue the program, adding an extra 1,000 trees per year.

The program is now the largest municipal tree planting effort in North America.
