County composter, barrel sale to run for one day

The county will host a one day backyard compost bin and rain barrel sale on April 17  from 8am  to 1pm – or while supplies last.

The event runs rain or shine.

The backyard composters and rain barrels will be available at subsidized prices of $20 and $45 respectively (tax included) to county residents (excluding Guelph), on a first come, first served basis.

There will be a limit of two compost bins per person – cash or cheque sales will be made.

The sale will be held in the parking lot at the following locations:

– Liquidation World, 480 Smith Street (Highway 6), Arthur;

– Grand River Raceway, County Road 21, Elora; and

– Rockmosa community centre, 74 Christie Street, Rockwood.

Backyard composters are also sold at cost year-round at county waste facilities for $30 (taxes included).

Backyard composting can reduce the amount of residential waste sent to landfill by up to 30%.

Materials that can be composted include: vegetable and fruit scraps, grains, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, leaves, grass, yard trimmings, hair, shredded unbleached paper, etc.

Finished compost can be applied as a nutrient rich soil conditioner to lawns, gardens, or houseplants.

The solid waste services division is in the process of developing a master composter program to offer residents the opportunity to learn more about the effective use of their backyard composter. The program will offer workshops on backyard composting for the diversion of organics and ideas on using the resulting compost at home.

It will also offer residents the opportunity to become volunteers in the program to share their knowledge of backyard composting with their friends and neighbours.

Anyone interested in receiving updates on that initiative can sign up at the truckload sale on April 17 or by contacting solid waste services at 519-837-2601 or 1-866-899-0248, or visit www.wellington.ca.
