Councillor proposes tipping fee waiver on leaf and yard waste

WELLINGTON NORTH – Township councillor Dan Yake wants Wellington County to drop tipping fees on yard waste at the Riverstown Landfill Site.

The township offered pickup of these materials in April and May in Mount Forest and April and June in Arthur.

However the township program was dropped when an interim Wellington County yard waste program was initiated in May.

Yake, during the July 13 township council meeting, introduced a notice of motion that council request the county waive tipping fees at the Riverstown landfill for leaf and yard waste dropped off there by county residents.

“The program has been very confusing. It’s been tough for people to buy into,” said Yake.

“I think there’s a couple of things that may happen. I hope that it would help alleviate illegal dumping, help keep our streets clean after pickups have been done.

“I think it would maybe reduce organics going into the landfill site and I hope that it will help some of our residents transition into the new county waste program,” Yake suggested.

Mayor Andy Lennox said the motion would be discussed at the next Wellington North council meeting, scheduled for July 27.
