Council to fund $2,000 for updated Harriston history book

MINTO – There’s a new committee in town and council has agreed to provide it with $2,000 in seed money.

The Harriston history book committee was one of four delegations at an Oct. 7 meeting.

Committee member Ron Faulkner stated the delegation’s purpose is to remind council of the 150th anniversary for Harriston in 2028 and the importance of planning a celebration in advance.

One of those plans is a history book.

“It’s critical to record the annals of history in a history book,” Faulkner said.

According to him, the last Harriston history book covered events up to 1978.

Two individuals who took part in creating the last book, Judy Dirkson (councillor) and Judy Tuck, are also involved in the latest project.

“We would like to do the last 50 years,” he said. “We feel it is important because of the municipality of the Town of Harriston no longer exists. It’s now part of the Town of Minto [and] I think it’s important that that be recorded.”

The committee wants council to fund the project, at a cost of $2,000.

“It’ll probably cost more than $2,000,” said committee member Mary Jean Hartwig. “The last going rate I saw was 30 cents for a page of colour.”

Hartwig stated she would love the finished product to be a “book people feel comfortable leaving out on a coffee table … that it would have a visual appeal as well as its content.”

Councillor Ed Podniewicz asked if the committee has requested donations from other groups.

“Not yet … because we’re just getting started,” a group representative said.

Deputy Mayor Jean Anderson introduced a motion stating council will provide $2,000 in seed money to support the production and printing of the book. It was unanimously approved by council.
