Council supports farmland reimbursement

Council has supported a resolution calling on the provincial government to reimburse municipalities for revenue lost due to the 0.25 tax rate applied to farmland and managed forest land.

Finance director Mike Givens told council the reduced rate used to be covered by the province but now municipalities have to make up the shortfall themselves.

Last year other Mapleton taxpayers had to pay over $1.2-million to cover the difference in farmland taxes and almost $12,000 to make up for revenue lost on managed forest lands. It received funding for both through the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund of $714,400.

Council agreed to support the resolution from Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.
