Guelph-Eramosa council has approved the closure of several township roads for two Guelph Lake Triathlons next year.
On Dec. 2 council okayed the annual events – scheduled for June 21, 22 and Aug. 30 – including the closure of portions of local roads such as Watson, Jones Baseline, Guelph-Nichol Townline and Sideroad 20. Council passed a bylaw approving the road closures by a 3-1 vote, with councillor Corey Woods opposing the move.
Several councillors expressed concern with the impact the events’ road closures can have on local residents travelling the roads, particularly those trying to get to church or to transport farm machinery.
Mayor Chris White said he is hopeful some the past issues with the closures, including poor signs and insufficient warnings, have been addressed by event organizers.
