Classics in the Country come to arts centre May 26 and June 2

The Elora Centre for the Arts will be presenting two Classics in the Country concerts on May 26 and June 2.

The first will feature Yunona Taranova, an internationally acclaimed Russian modern classical pianist and composer, on May 26.

Taranova incorporates elements of different styles in each of her compositions, which creates a unique identity and sound.

Born to a family of professional musicians, she graduated as a pianist from the University of Arts in Kharkov, Ukraine, where she also studied composition. Her compositions, some of which call on the poetry of renowned authors such as F.G. Lorca and I. Annensky as well as her own lyrics, have been aired on various radio and TV stations. Her piano series Earth Mates was published in 2003.

Taranova’s shows are on May 26 at 3 and 5pm at the Elora Centre for the Arts. General admission tickets are $25 for adults and $19 for students and seniors.

D’Havila concert

Antonitas D’Havila, considered by many as the greatest living original and authentic Romany gypsy flamenco guitarist, will play at the centre on June 2.

Many people have visited gypsy encampments in the south of France, Spain and the U.K. to hear D’Havila, who has not had any formal training.

 Over the centuries very few Romany gypsy flamenco guitarist have ever left their homes to play in public.

Born in England of Gypsy ancestry in 1949, D’Havila was first introduced as a child to the guitar by his father.

Inspired by the other flamenco players, he perfected his technique in Spain and France. At age 20, he signed his first recording contract and has since produced numerous flamenco discs.

He plays over 100 of his own different variations on traditional Flamenco motifs.

D’Havila’s shows are June 2 at  7:30 and 9:30pm at the Elora Centre for the Arts. General admission tickets are $25 for adults and $19 for students and seniors.
