FERGUS – Children were evacuated for about half an hour on Monday afternoon, as firefighters looked for the source of light smoke and a bad smell inside the daycare at J.D. Hogarth Public School.

Centre Wellington Fire Rescue Services Chief Tom Mulvey said debris down a baseboard heater was the cause.

"The crews quickly figured out what it was and we aired out the room," Mulvey said.

Volunteers from the Fergus and Elora fire stations left the school at around 2:15pm on Nov. 24, but not before honking a firetruck's air horn and waving to the children bundled up outside.

"All staff, students and visitors are safe and we have been cleared by the fire department to re-enter the school," stated a message sent to families by the Upper Grand District School Board.

"We were outside for approximately 30 minutes in total."
