FERGUS – This year’s Tree of the Year is a northern red oak, at the home of Pete and Donna Wilson at 360 Provost Lane in Fergus. The tree is estimated to be 156 years old and would have been a large tree when the home was built. It has survived despite road salt, traffic, hydro wires and soil compression. “We have this tree today because somebody decided not to cut it down,” said Tree Trust director Toni Ellis at a celebration on Sept. 21, where the tree was wrapped with a sash.
