ELORA – While no decision has been made on a short-term rental bylaw, Centre Wellington’s municipal accommodation tax (MAT) comes into effect on Jan. 1.

Township CAO Dan Wilson was asked about the MAT tax at an Oct. 28 luncheon hosted by the Centre Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

It adds a five per cent tax to all hotel, bed and breakfast, and short-term rental stays in the township.

Half of the funds collected will go to the township and the other half to the new economic development and tourism municipal service corporation that’s currently under development.

Council will decide how to spend its half during 2027 budget deliberations.

Wilson said the township has communicated with all of the hotels and short-term rentals in the township and it will be up to them to collect the tax.

Wilson said there are 235 short-term rentals in Centre Wellington and even though the bylaw and regulations to control them are not yet finalized, the MAT tax comes into force on Jan. 1.
