Centre Wellington declares ‘significant weather event’

CENTRE WELLINGTON – Township officials here have declared a “significant weather event” due to recent and projected weather, which can lead to poor visibility and road conditions.

Centre Wellington officials announced the move on Dec. 30 at 11am in response to the “snowfall, high winds and blowing snow affecting the community”

A township press release cited an Environment Canada forecast calling for flurries and snow squalls on Tuesday afternoon and into the evening, including winds gusts reaching 50 to 60km/h.

“These conditions may impact the township’s ability to meet normal winter road maintenance timelines,” stated the release.

It noted the township declaration means municipal maintenance crews are responding, but “achieving normal maintenance standards” may be delayed “until the event has ended and conditions improve.”

Officials say residents should:

  • exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel;
  • reduce speed and increase following distance if travel is necessary;
  • watch for drifting snow and sudden white-out conditions;
  • keep headlights on to improve visibility; and
  • give snowplows plenty of space and never pass a plow unless it is safe and legal to do so.
