Centre Wellington council offers kudos to staff

Councillors here have offered a huge thank you to township staff for efforts during December’s ice storm.

On Jan. 20, Centre Wellington Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj thanked the staff attending the meeting and each and all those who “put in the extra effort to get us through the ice storm.

“Everyone stepped right up to the plate.”

She said there were a number of people who worked right through Christmas.

Ross-Zuj said Centre Wellington’s warming station was open all through the holidays.

“We had over 100 people use the warming station. It was well used during the daytime, but there were no overnight guests.”

She said perhaps the cots at the community centre did not look too inviting.

“Everyone found a place to sleep, but were back the next day to shower and warm up.”

Ross-Zuj said a debrief session has already happened for those involved.

“Lots of good information was put onto the table and a lot of lessons have been learned.”

Ross-Zuj then also commented briefly on the contents of 72-hour emergency kits.

“You’ve probably used the stuff that was in there by now.”

She advised now is the time to bring those kits up to date.

“It’s critical in those first few hours to have everything that you need.”

For those who are unsure of what should be in the kits, the mayor said the township can provide lists of items.
