Centre Wellington boy wins national lacrosse championship with Team Ontario

CENTRE WELLINGTON – Drew Adams is now a national box lacrosse champion.

Adams, 12, who plays with the Centre Wellington Riverhawks, was selected to compete in Halifax with the U13 Team Ontario.

The tournament ran from Aug. 11 to 15, and Team  Ontario dominated.

They went undefeated throughout the tournament, winning in the final 9-2 against British Columbia.

“Everyone was playing really good,” said Adams.

He added that the team’s passing was executed precisely, saying they “might have missed like one or two passes the entire tournament.”

Adams said his focus on the team was defence, saying he had to do lots of checking and communicating with partners.

He said he enjoyed the physical aspect of the sport, adding, “It was really fun and I got to meet new kids.”

Adams’ mother, Jennifer, said Team Ontario players “really bonded” at the tournament.

Adams had to go through multiple tryouts to make the team.

He decided to try out after being encouraged by coaches, but also because he believed in his own ability, and wanted to test his skill alongside other strong players.

Adams’ CW Riverhawks team won provincials last year.

He said a few players from his team tried out, but Adams was the only one to make Team Ontario.

Adams, who has been playing lacrosse since he was three years old, said he has aspirations to play in a professional league.

He practices a lot, and said he just needs to “keep getting better and better.”
