CBC Searchlight winner performing in Eden Mills

Music at the Hall is presenting Lauren Mann and the Fairly Odd Folk in the Eden Mills Community Hall on Aug 2 at 8pm.

The alt-folk troupe won CBC’s 2014 Searchlight Contest for “best new act” this spring, beating out thousands of artists in different genres with their song I Lost Myself.

CBC Searchlight judge and singer/songwriter Torquil Campbell said, “This band sounds really awesome. The song is gorgeous.

“They are terrific songwriters.”

Lauren Mann and the Fairly Odd Folk were founded in 2008 in Calgary. Since then they have toured North America, with over 500 tour dates and 5,000 albums sold. The first album was titled Stories from Home and now, under their own label Wanderer Records, they have released Over Land and Sea with another in the works.

The band includes Lauren Mann (vocals, piano, ukele), Jay Christman (drums, guitar), Jessica Christman (bass, additional keys, BGV’s), Josh Akin (electric/acoustic guitar) and Zoltan Szoges (additional keys, percussion, glockenspiel).

Officials say Eden Mills is fortunate to be one of the stops on the band’s busy trans-Canada summer tour.

Laura Wilkes of UK’s Fortitude Magazine summed up the band’s music this way:

“In a time with so much manufactured ‘music’ designed to infiltrate your brain, and your wallet, the beautiful integrity with which Lauren Mann and The Fairly Odd Folk write and play their music is similar to falling into your warm, comfortable bed at the end of a long, tiring day.”

The concert will raise funds for the ongoing refurbishment of the Community Hall.

A cash bar offering beer and wine will be available.

Tickets are $30 for adults, $10 for students and can be purchased at the door, the Bookshelf in Guelph or from Kathie at 519-501-3550.
