Canada’s most patriotic village gears up for Canada Day celebration this weekend

ARTHUR – Canada Day is just around the corner and the Arthur community is gearing up for a big celebration.

The event will be hosted by the Arthur Optimist Club, from June 27 to 29.

On Friday, a mixed and men’s 3-pitch tournament will begin at 7pm, with a performance from local musician Cara Smith at the pavilion, located at 158 Domville St.

Smith is a country and rock singer who lives just outside of Arthur.

“The importance of celebrating Canada Day means a lot,” Arthur Optimist Club treasurer Nick Hansen told the Advertiser.

“We need to stand up and understand Arthur is the most patriotic village in all of Canada, and I think that really sounds well with what we do for Canada Day weekend. Hopefully we’ll get the community’s support behind us.”

Officials note the beer garden will be open all weekend long for guests to enjoy.

On Saturday the 3-pitch tournament will continue throughout the day, accompanying a horseshoe tournament at 1pm, a free swim (Arthur Public Pool) at 1pm and a pavilion dance with DJ Steve Leask at 9pm.

The day will end with fireworks at dusk.

Sunday includes a family and business 3-pitch tournament, kids activities at 1pm and an outdoor movie (A Minecraft Movie) at dusk on the ‘B’ ball diamond.

“It’s tough in this day and age with the economy and everything, but we appreciate people being able to support us,” Hansen said.

He noted funds raised at the events “go back into minor sports, improvements within the community and club projects.

“We really flourish on our involvement with the community and making sure we’re giving back.”

Hansen noted the annual Arthur celebration began as a relief fund in 1985 to raise funds for those affected by a tornado and “it’s been going ever since and the community has bought into it.”

He said the event is a great opportunity for high school students seeking volunteer hours. Those interested in volunteering can email arthuroptimistclub@gmail.com.

Aside from the club’s event, the Arthur Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Canada Day Street Market on June 28 from 9am to 2pm. Held on Charles Street, it will include kids activities, live entertainment, food trucks, vendors, face painting, chalk colouring and more.
