Bridge replacements near Arthur ahead of schedule: Wellington North mayor
WELLINGTON NORTH – The replacement of four bridges east of Arthur is underway and construction is ahead of schedule.
Mayor Andy Lennox gave an update on the project during a March 23 council meeting.
The four bridges, each on Wellington Road 109 over the Conestogo River, are the county’s responsibility.
Lennox said the bridge furthest from Arthur was the first to be replaced and is “virtually complete.”
Construction began on the second bridge last year and will continue this year, and construction on the third will begin this year.
If things continue to progress at this pace, Lennox said the project may be completed in 2027.
The county expected the $22-million project to be completed by 2028.
The county’s road reserve funds will be used to cover the majority of the costs, supplemented with $4.16 million from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, $3.98 million from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund and $1.5 million from the Canada Community-Building Fund (formerly gas tax).
Wellington Road 109 will remain open throughout the bridge replacements – for three of the bridges traffic is directed through one lane, and for the bridge closest to Arthur two-way traffic will be maintained with a temporary bridge.
