Be prepared for flooding: GRCA

WELLINGTON COUNTY – The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is urging caution around waterways.

The weather system over on March 29 and 30 brought 20 to 40mm of rain across the Grand River watershed, officials state, and they expect local water levels to remain high this week as watercourses react to runoff.

“While significant rainfall for the beginning of this week has ended, river flows will remain elevated as runoff from rain and any remaining snow melt drains through the river system.”

GRCA reservoirs are being operated to reduce the impact of downstream flooding. Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with local municipal flood response programs and be prepared for flooding due to the elevated risk at this time.

Banks adjacent to local waterways are very slippery and, when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard.

Any ice-covered bodies of water are considered unsafe. Parents are reminded to keep children and pets away from all water bodies.
