Created in 2008, this production of The Nutcracker premiered to rave reviews and puts a Canadian stamp on Tchaikovsky’s well-loved score.

Choreographed by Bengt Jörgen, this delightful re-working of the timeless classic is born from a collaboration with the world-renowned McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

Ballet Jörgen’s The Nutcracker features as backdrops, Canada’s 20th Century landscape artists Franklin Carmichael’s Church and Houses at Bisset (1931), Tom Thomson’s Snow in the Woods (1916) and L.L. FitzGerald’s Trees and Wildflowers (1922).

Audiences embark on a grand journey through our northern lands filled with snowflakes, trilliums and woodland creatures.

Roles such as Beaver, Frog, Dragonfly, Squirrel and Bear Cub will be filled by young dancers selected during the auditions on Sept. 9.

Founded in 1987, Ballet Jörgen is a classical ballet company with the mandate of making ballet accessible and relevant to 21st century audiences.

Ballet Jörgen strives to make dance inclusive of everyone, inspiring participation in and appreciation of the arts through personal connections and experience.

“Telling Canadian stories, and creating dance works informed by our Canadian identity, Ballet Jörgen is the most widely toured of Canada’s professional ballet companies – a true national treasure,” official state.
