WELLINGTON NORTH – Students at St. John Catholic School in Arthur practiced French, baked cookies, played music and learned about Métis history during an interactive lesson from Susanne Thériault-Golds on Jan. 22.

Thériault-Golds said her visits help students feel more comfortable speaking French and offer a cultural reference for the language.

She also teaches life skills, including making food and washing dishes, she added.

Thériault-Golds has been running Chef à l’École for 21 years, and said students often ask her to return to their schools.

“They’re proud of themselves because they bake something from scratch, and did it in a different language,” she said, adding many students say “I guess I know more French than I realized.”

Thériault-Golds told the Grade 6, 7 and 8 students that if they say a new word 26 times they will remember it.
