What started as a letter from an Arkell youth is resulting in a new basketball court at Arkell Park.

It all started earlier this year with a letter from local youth Graham Williams requesting a basketball court in the park on Boreham Drive.

Recent information directed to Puslinch council on Sept. 7 indicates the Puslinch Optimists are picking up the ball on this project.

A letter from Optimist Club president Vince Klimkosz stated the total cost of the project is projected to be $30,000.

The proposed general contractor, Davan Landscape, has offered their services without cost to the Optimist Club. As a result, the total commitment for the Optimist Club is $20,000.

“It is our hope that we will involve additional local contractors to work with us to reduce the cost to the club and make this a true community project,” said Klimkosz.

“We are committed to this project and would like to start construction this fall if all approvals are secured without delay.”

He added, “We are excited to have the opportunity of working on such a project for the kids in our township.”

Council approved the club’s proposal for the basketball court and directed staff to work with them on the installation of the facility.

Councillor John Sepulis asked that a letter be sent to the club thanking them for their involvement in the project.

Councillor Matthew Bulmer stated this move continues a tradition in the township of the community pitching in to make something happen.
