I was deeply saddened to learn from your paper that the Wellington County Council has decided to discontinue the OPP Mounted Unit. I have no doubt that economically this was a sensible decision. However, many of us were drawn to Centre Wellington by its unique charm; the fact that our community derives considerable income from tourism suggests that it makes sense to support the many things that make us special. The Mounted Unit has brought a great deal of charm to so many of our community events, and has been an excellent outreach opportunity for the OPP. While I applaud the frugal stewardship demonstrated by our Council, I fear that they have taken a great step towards making Centre Wellington more ordinary.
