Annual musical comedy for charity returns for fourth year with Sleeping Beauty

A Sleeping Beauty pantomime is coming to the Fergus Grand Theatre.

For the past three years On the Spot Productions has presented a musical comedy panto to raise money for a local charity. Past productions include Aladdin, Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk.

This year the cast is taking on Sleeping Beauty.

All the proceeds will be donated to Hopewell Children’s Homes Inc. and St. John Ambulance.

“We’ve done our own poster … we went door to door asking the community to get involved so we could get as much of the  play done so we could donate as many of the proceeds as possible to Hopewell Homes,” said Leigha Bailey, co-director for the production.

“So it’s a lot of pounding the pavement but the whole community just really came together.”

The production has between 20 and 25 sponsors from Elora and Fergus and a cast of 24 local actors, 14 of which are under the age of 18.

“Half the cast is the original cast from Aladdin and the other half, basically the younger half, we auditioned this year for scene-change crew and they’ll be our future stars because all of our stars are graduating,” Bailey explained.

Being a panto, Sleeping Beauty is an interactive comedy and the audience will have the opportunity to meet the characters and be a part of the play.

“It’s like Shrek; adults really enjoy it but the kids really enjoy it too and it’s a nice balance,” Bailey said.

“No one’s bored … and it’s very, very funny.”

Sleeping Beauty will be at the Fergus Grand Theatre on Nov. 27 at 7pm, Nov. 28 at 2 and 7pm and Nov. 29 at 2pm.  Adult tickets are $15 and children’s tickets are $10; however the first 100 children’s tickets are free for walk-in or phone orders.

Tickets can be purchased at the theatre box office, by phone at 519-787-1981 or on the theatre website at www.fergusgrandtheatre.ca.
