"Cocaine" was carfentanil
Police say five individuals charged with a litany of offences earlier this year were actually in possession of carfentanil and not cocaine.
On Jan. 2, Wellington County OPP recovered a stolen vehicle near Elora Street North in Clifford. The investigation led to five people being charged.
On May 10, the OPP announced an analysis of narcotics seized in the investigation revealed the substance initially believed to be cocaine is carfentanil.
The original charges were:
- Tyler James Geiger, 32, of Chesley, possession of methamphetamine, possession of cocaine, failing to comply with probation order and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000;
- April Lindsay Tone, 38, of Ayton, possession of methamphetamine and cocaine, and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order;
- David Dwight Pyke, 56, of Clifford, possession of methamphetamine and cocaine and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000;
- Nicholas Arthur Warner, 35, of Huron-Kinloss, possession of methamphetamine and cocaine; and
- Brandon Robert Wayne Mitchell, 21, of Southgate, possession of methamphetamine and cocaine, failing to comply with a probation order, failing to comply with a recognizance, obstructing police and personation with intent to avoid arrest.
