Wheels of Hope raises over $100,000 to support cancer patients
FERGUS – Wheels of Hope hosted its annual Golf Classic, raising $185,000 for the Wheels of Hope transportation program.
Now celebrating 40 years, the organization hosted the event at Cutten Fields Golf and Country Club and saw 146 golfers and nearly 200 attendees for dinner, which featured a live and silent auction.
“We started this program, the Wheels of Hope program, back in 1986,” said Wheels of Hope chair person Fred Booth.
Wheels of Hope is a free, volunteer-run transportation program that seeks to ease the burden of travel for those battling cancer.
In 2025, the program assisted 165 clients, covering 193,486km and making 4,710 trips with 35 volunteer drivers.
The program costs nearly $200,000 annually to run.
“We transfer cancer patients who need help getting to and from their life-saving treatments, free of charge,” said Booth.
“So then the patients can focus on getting their health better and not worrying about transportation costs.”
Booth added, “And it’s very important to know here that the money that we raise stays in Wellington County and the Guelph area – doesn’t go into a giant pot somewhere, and we never see the funds.
“No this is money that we raise, and it stays in the community for the Wheels of Hope program.”
Booth thanked both the volunteers as well as those who participated in this year’s fundraiser, noting 95 per cent of golfers return each year to show their support for the cause.
