Water monitoring report draws questions

A 2012 groundwater summary report drew more than a few questions  from Puslinch council on March 20.

As council reviewed the report from Capital Paving regarding the Wellington Pit, Mayor Dennis Lever said, “I have some real concerns.”

He said when the municipality received the document, the covering pages noted groundwater monitoring had stopped in 2010 “... and now we are getting a report for 2012. Nothing was done in between.”

He said there was a request to stop groundwater monitoring, “but we did not agree to that. My understanding was that the Ministry of Natural Resources did not agree either.”

But nobody seemed to be following up that these reports were not being produced.

He said the municipality is receiving reports, but there appears to be no checklist.

“We would expect the MNR to be doing this as part of the site plan requirements, but they don’t seem to be doing it.”

Lever recommended that a letter to be drafted to the local MNR office to find out what happened.

He said an explanation is needed as to why, for a two-year period, when the municipality went through the biggest drought in some time, there was no monitoring.

“It bothers me.”
