Warden's Bonspiel to benefit Syrian refugees

Funds raised at a curling bonspiel here this fall will be used to assist Syrian refugees.

Warden George Bridge announced at the Sept. 24 Wellington County council meeting that proceeds from the Warden’s Bonspiel, to be held Nov. 13, will be used to help alleviate the ongoing crisis.

Noting that councillor Lynda White had drawn his attention toward the refugee situation, Bride stated, “I would like to designate that bonspiel as a fundraiser for their relief.”

Wellington scholarships

GUELPH - Recipients of the 2015 Wellington County scholarships were selected by county council members during an in-camera session at the Sept. 24 meeting.

The following students will each receive a $500 scholarship towards their post-secondary education: Melchoir Bodnar-Dudley, Maggie Riley, Daeun Yoon, Emily Weber and Tailor Campbell of Norwell District Secondary School; Megan Sanderson of John F. Ross Secondary School; Shane Wilson of Erin District High School; David Lee of Centre Wellington District High School; Erica Gibson of St. James Catholic High School; and Kaitlin Brown of Wellington Heights Secondary School.

Plowing showcase

FINCH - Warden George Bridge said a local delegation attending the 2015 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo here found the match well organized and enjoyable.

“They are so friendly,” Bridge said of match hosts.

“I’m looking forward to us putting on a great show in 2016,” when the IPM will be held near Harriston,  he added.

While plowing remains the focus, “it really is a rural expo now and it’s amazing how much information you can get when you go around to the booths,” said Bridge.

He noted hosting the match in Wellington “will give us a chance to really showcase where we stand as an agricultural centre.”
