Township seeks feedback on accommodation tax

CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Township of Centre Wellington is moving forward with the implementation of a municipal accommodation tax – a fee applied to overnight stays in hotels, motels and short-term accommodations.

Paid by visitors, the tax makes tourists contribute to the local amenities and services they enjoy during their stay.

This initiative will have no direct cost to residents or accommodation owners/operators, while helping reduce reliance on property taxes by generating new, dedicated revenue, township officials say.

Funds collected through the tax will be reinvested directly into tourism initiatives and township infrastructure, added officials.

In September, council approved the next phase of municipal accommodation tax implementation, including the creation of a new municipal services corporation – a township-owned, arms-length entity that will administer the tax program.

Beyond managing the tax, the corporation will focus on driving investment and job creation, officials say.

“The municipal accommodation tax is an opportunity to strengthen Centre Wellington’s visitor economy in a way that benefits all of us,” stated Mayor Shawn Watters.

“By reinvesting [the tax] revenues locally, we’re building a stronger, more resilient community – and we want to make sure your voice helps shape how we get there.”

The township is inviting residents/stakeholders to share feedback through the municipal accommodation tax survey.
