Township renames Elora bridge to honour Jack R. MacDonald

ELORA – The Victoria Street Bridge in Elora has been renamed the Jack R. MacDonald Bridge.

Centre Wellington council unanimously passed the motion requesting the name change at its Aug. 26 meeting (Mayor Kelly Linton was absent).

CAO Andy Goldie told council the name proposal was due to MacDonald’s large contribution to the township.

Goldie said staff plan to have story boards out at the bridge opening later this fall to tell the story of the MacDonald family.

“I can definitely see how this bridge is coming along,” said councillor Stephen Vanleeuwen, who chaired the meeting in Linton’s absence.

“It’s looking really good down there, so very excited to get across that bridge.”

Goldie also provided an update on  the Elora Sculpture Project.

The group received $25,000 through the Jack R. MacDonald community project, but due to an unsuitable initial location there is not yet a spot designated for the sculpture.

Goldie said the site needs to provide a 360-degree view of the sculpture.

Officials are looking for a new location.
