Township making progress on projects

MAPLETON – The public works department here is reporting progress on repairs to sidewalks, roads and bridges; fleet replacement; and upgrades to parks, trails and facilities. 

Sidewalks 

More than 650 metres of sidewalks in Drayton and Moorefield have been replaced this year, including sections of Drayton’s Wellington Street South, Main Street East and Union Street, and Moorefield’s Booth Street West and Maudsley Street. The repair program is expected to total $156,000.  

Roads

Mapleton completed reconstruction of the following thus far this year: 

– Concession 3, between Wellington Roads 9 and 10; and 

– Concession 4 from one kilometre west of Sideroad 3 to  Wellington Road 9. 

The township also patched the asphalt on 4th Line from Wellington Road 12 to Yatton Sideroad, and report that construction is 60 per cent complete on Conestoga Drive from Smith Street to Green Street.

The roadwork projects are all part of the township’s hot mix paving and asphalt program, which was awarded to Cox Construction for $965,527. 

Bridges

Construction is underway for the replacement of a steel truss bridge on Sideroad 6, south of Highway 109. South Shore Contracting is completing the work for about $1.44 million. 

Mapleton will soon rehabilitate a bridge on 12th Line, east of Wellington Road 11. According to the township website, the “structure is in overall good condition but concrete repairs are recommended.” The work includes waterproofing and asphalt overlay, and is expected to cost $505,000. The engineering work is complete and the project is to be tendered later this year. 

For bridges on 4th Line (east of Wellington Road 11), Sideroad 16 (north of 14th Line), 16th Line (first and third bridges east of Wellington Road 11), design/engineering contracts have been awarded to Pearson Engineering. Rehabilitations are set for 2027 and are expected to total $1.6 million for the four bridges.  

 Fleet, machinery, equipment

The township has also replaced three pieces of equipment this year: it’s grader ($650,000), roadside mower ($40,000), tractor/blower ($85,000) and two zero-turn lawn mowers ($35,000). 

Parks, trails

For its parks and trails program, Mapleton has completed improvements to the Drayton Walking Trail Bridge for $18,000. 

It has also ordered lights for the Drayton ball diamond, and installation is scheduled for mid-September. The project is to cost $25,000. 

Facilities

Mapleton has completed kitchen renovations at the Maryborough Community Centre ($194,000), exterior repairs to the Drayton Festival Theatre ($25,000) and exterior painting of the Drayton and Moorefield sand/salt buildings ($30,000).
