Toronto documentarian sponsors remembrance banner for Sytske Drijber
ACTON – Toronto documentarian Zach Dunn has sponsored a banner in memory of late Rockwood resident and Second World War veteran Sytske Drijber.
Hers is the third veteran banner Dunn has sponsored, and he plans to continue honouring veterans by paying for more banners to be installed.
Dunn also honours veterans with his video documentary series Global Veteran Stories, which includes over 165 interviews with veterans from the Second World War, Korean War and Vietnam War.
He interviewed Drijber in her Rockwood home the day before her 103rd birthday.
Drijber shared stories of her time serving in Java, Indonesia, where she met her future husband, Oscar.
Asked if she had a message to pass on to the young people of today, Drijber urged people to be grateful to live in a free country and stressed the importance of understanding political parties, voting in elections and paying attention to the news.
“It’s important to know what’s happening in our country,” Drijber said.
“Each individual is really important, I think people don’t realize that – the power of one.”
