Three remembrance services in Minto
MINTO – Three different Remembrance Day ceremonies to honour Canadian veterans.
In Clifford on Nov. 8 at 2pm, a ceremony will be held at the cenotaph by the Harriston Legion Branch 296.
“This is a shorter service,” legion president Anne South told the Community News.
The Harriston Legion will hold a second ceremony on Nov. 11 at 11am at the Harriston cenotaph on Elora street.
“School children march with us as well as the cadets,” she added. “The conflicts have changed over the years, but we still have soldiers fighting.”
“It’s important that the schoo lchildren, especially, know why they fought. They fought for our freedom.”
She also spoke about the poppy campaign, which started Oct. 24, and the contactless tap-to-donate boxes which can be found at the Home Hardware and liquor store in Harriston. The boxes will charge $5 per tap.
“You’re not paying for the poppy, you’re making a donation to the veterans,” South clarified.
“The Legion is just as important today as it was years ago because we still do so much for the community and newer veterans as well,” she said.
Palmerston ceremony
Palmerston residents can expect a Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at the cenotaph located next to the Palmerston library.
“The parade itself leaves the legion at 10:30am and we’ll go to the cenotaph,” Palmerston Legion poppy chair Bill Dobson told the Community News. “The ceremony usually starts between 10:45 to 11am.”
“We’ll stop for a moment of silence and the Last Post at 11am,” with the service usually completed by 11:45am, he said.
The parade will march back to the legion for a free light lunch of soup and sandwiches open to the public.
Later that night the public can return to the legion at 6pm for a roast beef dinner hosted by the Ladie’s Auxiliary. Tickets can be purchased for $25.
