A group working to bring Syrian refugees to the community has received word a family will be arriving soon.

While no arrival date has been set yet, “all the paperwork is in place, our family is ready to travel,” stated June Macdonald of the committee organizing the local sponsorship effort, which is spearheaded by Knox-Calvin Presbyterian Church.

“Allowing for the political unrest in Turkey where they are waiting in a camp in Ankara, they will be arriving in the next four to six weeks,” said Macdonald in an email.

She added the family designated to Harriston is larger than originally anticipated, with two parents, three girls and three boys from ages three to 12.

“The community has been very generous in supporting this project, and now our most urgent need is for adequate housing,” stated Macdonald. “We are still looking for a house or apartment, preferably located in town, both for convenience and to avoid their feeling isolated.”
