Dear Editor:

Re: County positioned for transition of recycling duties

Amazing! The provincial government is finally setting dates to make producers responsible for recycling their packaging, but this is still not good enough.

The federal government needs to dictate that packaging contain a certain percentage of recycled plastics. This will create a market for recycled plastics which now often end up in the dump. How stupid is that; citizens at great municipal taxpayer expense separate their recyclables into blue boxes only to have them fill up their landfills at the end of the process. Come on - you people in government who claim to have the environment at heart, put in place some simple rules: ban any packaging that can’t be recycled and mandate that all packaging have a percentage of recycled material.

All countries in the world need to do this. Maybe then the fishes in the deep blue sea will get a cleaner home to swim in and landfills wouldn’t fill up so fast.

I don’t expect much movement on this as we are the stupidest living creatures on Earth to befoul our nest with garbage that takes 500 years to break down.

Jane Vandervliet,

Erin
