It all began back in 1945, when Franklin and Dorothy Speers set up their modest business in downtown Elora. Back then, they ran a radio/television/small appliance sales-and-service store. With the arrival of electricity in this rural area, Franklin took on the additional task of wiring houses and farms. Following that came the demand for major appliances, so Franklin and Dorothy responded accordingly and moved the business to larger premises across the street, where they also raised their family of seven children.
In 1969 Jim Speers, Franklin and Dorothy’s son, joined the business. This was also a period of new growth for Speers Electric. At the time, the inventory was stored in several different locations around town. To consolidate, a new location was acquired on the south side of Elora and a new building was built to accommodate the inventory under one roof. New installations and service were added for chicken and turkey barns and dairy operations. Well-pumps and related service were also added to the mix.
Another expansion occurred in 1972, when a furniture department was added. Despite a promising start and a brisk period of sales, an economic downturn in the early 80’s forced the family to close that part of the business. But Speers Electric prevailed!
In 2015, Jim’s son, Kyle took over the business. The subsequent years have seen a move into hot tub installation and service, adding to the already impressive array of services on offer. Let’s have a look at some of them!
