SMITH, (Edna) Marie

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of (Edna) Marie Smith, who passed away peacefully on September 1st, 2026, at the age of 98. Marie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Alvin (2002); her daughter, Marjorie (2007); and her brothers, Bill (1988) and Hugh (2000) Saunders. She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Lyman (Laura); her grandchildren Leah (Todd), Paige (Justin), Luke, Rebecca (Ivar), Shyloh (Samantha) and Tamika; and her 6 great-grandchildren. Born in West Luther Township on June 21st, 1928, Marie spent her life surrounded by family, friends and community. She married Alvin on August 31st, 1949, and together they lived and raised their family on their farm on the 8th Line of West Garafraxa. Music was an important part of Marie’s life. She was a longtime organist at St. John’s United Church in Belwood, where she shared her love of music with her church community. She also loved playing the piano and continued to play right up until her final days. She generously shared her musical talents with others and taught piano to local youth over the years. Marie was an active and cherished member of her community. She enjoyed many activities throughout her life, including cross-country skiing, walking with the ladies and enjoying coffee at Super Snax, lawn bowling, and working on puzzles. She also enjoyed many years working at Ron Wilkin Jewellers in Fergus. Later in life, Marie enjoyed many of the social groups at Highland Manor; where she lived for 10 years. She would often be found playing the piano for her fellow residents or completing a puzzle in the games room. She will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, sense of community and her love of music. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Highland Manor Retirement Centre, Groves Memorial Community Hospital and St. Joseph’s Health Centre for the care and compassion they provided to Marie. Memorial Service was held on Monday, September 7th, 2026, at St. John’s United Church in Belwood. Family received relatives and friends at 10:00am with the service beginning at 11:00am. Lunch to follow with internment at 2:00pm at McKee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s United Church, Belwood. Marie will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
