CENTRE WELLINGTON – The OPP closed a section of Wellington Road 19 the evening of July 19 because of a sinkhole and the road remained closed for most of July 20 while county work crews repaired the area.

The road was closed between 2nd Line and Wellington Road 16, causing a bit of mayhem for commuters, although for golfers, access to the Fergus Golf Club remained accessible.

Joe de Koning, manager of roads for the county, said in an email that an 18” diameter corrugated steel pipe had collapsed, causing the material around the pipe to settle, leaving a sinkhole on the surface.

“Staff observed settlement in the road during patrol,” he stated in an email.

“Inspection of the culvert resulted in the road being closed last night (July 19).”

Road crews were at the site on July 20, replacing the pipe and patching the road enough to be useable.

De Koning said he expected the road to reopen around 6pm.

Asphalt paving of the road section is to be completed next week, he said.
