SHORTREED, Barbara Ann (née Towriss)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Shortreed, who passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, in her 72nd year, surrounded by the love of her family. Barbara was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband Steve; her beloved daughter Amanda; and her cherished granddaughters, Lydia and Ava. The loss of each of them remained in her heart every day, yet she continued to face life with remarkable strength, grace, and unwavering love for those around her. She leaves behind a family who adored her: her children Angela (Joe), Adam (Mariia), and John (Catherine); Debbie and Heather (Doug); and her treasured grandchildren Damian, Tristan, Ethan (Rei), Owen, Henry, Brooklynn, Willow, and Rowan, each of whom brought immense joy and pride to her life. She will also be deeply missed by her sisters, Sharon and Bonnie (Jerry); her brother, Ken; her sister-in-law, Sandy (Glen); her chosen sisters, Hania and Pat; her bonus girl Shay; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, neighbours, and friends whose lives were touched by her kindness. Mom was a remarkable woman. She was strong, warm, and endlessly devoted to the people she loved. She faced life’s challenges with courage, determination, and quiet resilience. She loved fiercely, protected those she cared about, and gave of herself generously. Her strength was matched only by her compassion. She created a welcoming home where everyone was invited, accepted, and made to feel like they belonged. Her door was always open, and her home was filled with laughter, stories, traditions, and unconditional love. Whether you were family, a friend, or someone who simply needed a place to land, Mom had a way of making you feel at home. She was “ride or die” for the people she loved and stood beside them through every high and every low. Mom loved people and loved to talk. She could turn a quick errand into a conversation with a stranger, and a phone call into hours of laughter, stories, and connection. She had a quick wit, a great sense of humour, and was wonderfully and unapologetically herself. She could swear like a sailor, tell a story that would have everyone laughing, and make even ordinary moments memorable. Her signature goodbye, “Talk AT you later,” perfectly captured her warmth and her belief that every connection mattered. She was kind and welcoming, but if you crossed her or got her started on something she was passionate about, especially politics, you’d better be ready. Her opinions were honest, her words were colourful, and she never backed down from what she believed in. Mom enjoyed life’s simple pleasures: endless cups of coffee, cigarettes, a glass of wine, discount shopping, and candy, which may as well have been considered its own food group. These little pieces of who she was are the memories that will bring smiles to our faces for years to come. She often said that life was like a roller coaster, with its ups and downs, twists and turns, but she truly believed she had a wonderful life. Despite the challenges she faced, she focused on the love, the laughter, the memories, and the people who made the ride worthwhile. While our hearts are broken by her loss, we are deeply grateful for every memory, every lesson, and every moment we were fortunate enough to share with her. We find comfort in knowing that she is finally at peace and reunited with those she loved and missed so dearly. Our family extends our heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who provided compassionate palliative care. Your kindness, dedication, and support brought comfort to Mom and to our entire family during her final days. If Mom could leave one final message, it would be this: Be kind. Pay it forward. Keep finding joy, even when life brings hardship. Life is a roller coaster, so hold on, enjoy the ride, and appreciate every moment. Have a wonderful life. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held on Friday, July 31, from 1:00pm to 4:0pm at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, located at 280 St. David Street South, Fergus. The gathering will take place upstairs in the Wellington Room. Elevator access is available. Please come prepared to share your stories. In honour of her memory, the family encourages everyone to perform an act of kindness for someone else, just as she would have done.
