SCHWINT, Douglas Lyle “Doug”

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Doug Schwint on Thursday, July 30th, at Guelph General Hospital. We are heartbroken, but thankful for his blessed life. Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 74 years, Wilma (nee Waters), his children Stephen (Rhonda), Cindy (Dan), grandchildren Christopher, Robyn (Bryan), Todd (Dana), Jeremy (Brianna), Brett (Sarah). He was great-grandfather to Caine, Benjamyn, Raya, Carter, Gavin, River, Keira, and Frankie. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Peter Machin. Doug lived his younger years in Salem. After first meeting in high school, he married the love of his life, Wilma, and they settled in Elora. He followed in his father’s footsteps as a stonemason, building his own successful business in the Elora/Fergus area. Doug’s life encompassed his love of sport, being heavily involved in hockey, both playing and coaching. He was a skilled hockey player, having played for the Elmira Senior “B” Polar Kings, and then the Elora Intermediate “C” Rocks, with both teams bringing home championships. He was also an avid curler up to the age of 93, and a Lifetime Member of the Elora Curling Club. His other sporting endeavors included baseball, golfing, hunting and fishing. He loved, and took great pride in watching his grandchildren, and great grandchildren participate in their various sports. After travelling the world to more than 20 different countries, Doug and Wilma decided it was time to stay closer to home, and enjoyed many wonderful years travelling around Canada, and the U.S. in their 5th wheel trailer before setting it up permanently at” Dreammaker” campground in Southampton where they stayed for many more wonderful years. His sense of humour, warm heart, and genuine kindness touched everyone who knew him. He will be dearly missed. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 18th from 2:00 - 4:00pm at Graham Giddy Funeral Home in Fergus. The Funeral will take place on Wednesday, August 19th at 11:00am at Knox Presbyterian Church in Elora. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Doug, are asked to consider donating to Aboyne Rural Hospice, or Groves memorial Hospital. Arrangements entrusted with Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home.
