School's out, watch out

Two months of fun lay ahead with Canada Day starting off the holiday season.

It’s an exciting time and worthy of several reminders.

While kids get settled into summer programs, whether that be sleeping in, going to camp or a combination of events, most moms and dads still have to work.

Drivers used to kids being at school and zooming around town will need to be a little more wary.

Although the old swimming holes aren’t as common place as they used to be, it’s important to have a primer on water safety. Certainly trips to local beaches on lakes with undertows are an item to go over and over. Having reported numerous drownings over the years and witnessed close calls, we can say it’s something that never leaves a conscience. Please be safe.

For older kids, this will be the first chance at a summer job. Most companies are savvy enough to train and warn of possible dangers for summer students at a workplace. We don’t wish to see tragedies here either, so spend a few minutes and encourage new workers or your daughters and sons about the merits of safety at work.

Adding to these safety items are the element of distraction found with mobile devices today. Most workplaces ask that they be put away until break time. It’s important to recognize employers need not pay staff to text, and employees sure don’t need to be distracted and unaware of potential hazards.

We hope our readers have a great summer with their families.
