Retaining wall rehabilitation work to be awarded for $450,000
By Georgia York
GUELPH – The county roads committee passed a tender award for a retaining wall rehabilitation at 387 Geddes St. (Wellington Road 18) in Elora.
The scope of the work includes removing/replacing the sidewalk and retaining walls on the east side of Geddes Street and adding a new concrete barrier wall and guardrail on the west side. Additionally, improvements to the existing storm sewers are proposed.
Staff received nine bid submissions from contractors with prices ranging from $450,000 to $903,000 excluding tax.
The lowest bidder, from St. Clements, Kieswetter Excavating Inc., with a tendered amount of just over $450,000 was recommended by staff. The roads report notes Geddes Street will remain open during the construction by maintaining a single lane of through traffic.
Construction is slated to begin mid-May and finish by the end of August.
The total project costs equals $820,000 which includes tendered cost, contingency, professional fees and internal costs.
The original project budget was $1.62 million but staff received an “extremely favourable tender result,” treasurer Ken DeHart told the Advertiser.
As a result, a project surplus of $805,000 will return to the roads capital reserve.
The committee accepted the report, to be reviewed for approval at a Feb. 26 county council meeting.
