Regional program recognizes sustainable building features
Three counties launch voluntary development program
MEAFORD – Grey, Dufferin and Wellington counties have launched a voluntary program recognizing new residential developments constructed with energy efficiency, extreme weather and affordability in mind.
The Green Development Program was launched on Oct. 13 at the Baybounds Presentation Centre in Meaford.
“The [program] gives builders a way to stand out for their investment in more efficient, resilient homes,” Wellington North Mayor and county councillor Andy Lennox stated in a news release.
He added the cross-county program “sends a clear message” to developers that innovation in sustainable housing is welcomed in the communities.
Projects are assessed on 18 development features, and can receive bronze, silver or gold status based on a score.
Four developments in Grey and Dufferin counties were the first recognized under the program at its launch.
According to county climate change and sustainability manager Karen Chisholme, “[The county] had an agreement early on with Grey County and Dufferin County that we would provide ... $75,000.”
“It was a good investment for us, $75,000 for almost a half-million dollar project,” Chisholme said. “That’s a pretty good ... return.”
Any new residential build with occupancy after Jan. 1, 2025 is eligible. Participation is free and doesn’t affect development reviews and approval processes.
