Reflections: The splendour of holiness
By Laurie Langdon
A friend recently shared with me how her son had gone out to plough snow for someone.
Before he could get to his task, he realized that the next-door neighbor was struggling to create a drain so the water would run away from his house. Without hesitation, he started helping the neighbor and soon became engaged in conversation. While the conversation seemed natural, there was a sense that God’s holy presence was all around.
She continued to tell me about one of her other sons, who happens to love online gaming. The game host had encountered some serious family issues and found it necessary to be absent for a season. It had been a while, but they had just recently run into each other and became engaged in conversation. It was a beautiful time of connecting, where they were both able to engage in a meaningful way about real-life circumstances.
These little stories illustrate how that, while holiness is the topic of great and numerous works of literature and is being demonstrated and exemplified in the lives of countless people around the world and throughout history, it is also contained and manifested in the everyday activities of life.
In fact, the “splendour of [God’s] holiness” (Psalm 29:2) which I have in Christ is happening to me, as it is to countless others. It is happening through me, as it is to countless others. It is happening around me, as it is to countless others. No matter how chaotic or mundane my day may appear, everything in every way has magnificence. Whatever it looks like, each event of my life has splendour and purpose!
Seriously? Seriously!
Why is this so?
This is so because the holiness of God is a major active ingredient in me. I am literally transformed and empowered by it. Every moment of every day is permeated with it to the point that every event is a holy one. Consequently, every occasion has magnificence.
It is a fact that, whatever my day looks like, I can live in the confidence that I have full and complete victory over all my enemies. Because, in Christ, I am holy, and because the ground on which I stand is holy, no enemy can gain any foothold in me or in my territory.
There is no common ground for any of them to share in my life, and none of them have any right whatsoever to anything I am or anything that is mine, for I and that which is mine – is the Lord’s.
Each and every event of my day is an encounter with God. Oh, they may seem mundane or ordinary to me, but every event is actually a God-event. It is a holy event, because holiness is the condition I live in and it is the position I live out of.
I believe this!
