PUTZ, George
November 22, 1932 - March 19, 2026
In loving memory of George Emil Putz. George’s family mourns the loss of their beloved Papa, Opa and Great Opa. He leaves behind daughter Sylvia and sons Martin and Andy, and their spouses Jeff, Beth and Carol, as well his eight grandchildren Nathan (Taylor), Madison, Lucas, Matthew (Jessica), Eric (Holly), Isabel, Emily (Kyle) and Adrian, and great granddaughter Haisley. Sister Renate sends her sad goodbye, as well as the extended family in Germany. George was predeceased by his wife Doris, the love of his life, and his brother Herbert. George always considered himself to be a fortunate man—he thanked his lucky stars for finding and marrying his dear Doris, and spending most of his life with her. He immigrated to Canada, a country he loved. George was trained as a tool and die maker here, and enjoyed his work as a toolmaker and production mechanic. George and Doris built a happy family home in Guelph, and later, a cottage. The family enjoyed many adventures together, including kayaking and canoeing and cross-country skiing, and travel—all over North America in the family hatchback. George lived a long joyful life, and he always knew he was lucky. He survived many close calls—living through intense bombing as a child during the last months of WW2. Later in life, he survived several medical emergencies, and recuperated enough to plan a move into Long Term Care—but his famous luck finally ran out. George knew how to laugh and joke, even though he experienced great hardship in his youth. In spite of that, or maybe because of it, he remained a loving man, a man who was solid and steady, practical and pragmatic, and always clear in his intentions and actions, a man who enjoyed life and adventure, and a man who possessed a kind and generous soul. George enjoyed life-long ties with friends from the German immigrant community, and from many people he met along the way: his workmates, the families of his children’s in-laws and friends, and neighbours at the family home, at the cottage, and those in Toronto and Wellington County when he lived with his children over the last few years. The family had the pleasure of being with George often over the last few months—the extra time with him was truly a gift. We will miss his special spark and the loving glow that George embodied. All of us hope George found his way to Doris’ loving embrace and that they are together once again. The family is profoundly grateful to Hospice Wellington who did what they do so well, so George could slip peacefully and painlessly from this life. A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 26 at 7-9pm, at the Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon St. Guelph. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church, 175 Emma Street, Guelph, on Friday, March 27, 2026, at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to Hospice Wellington, or to the Canadian Cancer Society, specifically to Prostate Cancer Research.
