Public health, county encourage residents to test homes for radon

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Public health is partnering with Take Action on Radon, a national initiative funded by Health Canada and the Wellington County Library for the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge.

The campaign provides free radon test kits to the first 100 county residents who register at wdgpublichealth.ca/100KitChallenge.

“As the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, radon can pose a serious risk to you and your family, but there are steps you can take to ensure your home is safe,” stated Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) medical officer of health Dr. Nicola Mercer.

“By using a radon test kit, people can better understand their risks and take proper action to protect their households.”

Radon is a colourless, odourless, radioactive gas present in many homes. It is naturally occurring and found in soil, rock and groundwater.

Testing is the only way to measure for it in a home.

“The Wellington County Library is pleased to partner with [WDGPH],” said chief librarian Rebecca Hine.

“By providing free test kits to residents, we’re empowering our community to take simple steps that can make their homes safer and healthier.”

While the free kits are available only to county residents as part of this campaign, WDGPH officials are  encouraging all residents in the region to learn about radon and consider testing their homes. Radon test kits can be purchased on various websites.
