Platform absent?

Dear Editor:

Is Michael Chong running for the Green Party? He has mailed out flyers with a green background saying he is “a strong voice for the environment”.

Ads in the Wellington Advertiser  give this same message. But wait a minute - isn’t he running for a party that does not even recognize the severity of the climate crisis?

I attended two all-candidates meetings. At both events Chong began his speech by saying he was not going to speak about policies but rather would talk about his record, which he did. All the other candidates spoke comprehensively about their respective parties, their policies and platforms - all with civility and respect.

Only in the closing minutes of the debate did Chong mention the name of his party and its leader as he mounted a couple of childish insults about the prime minister - when there was no opportunity for question or rebuttal.

Why does Chong not speak about his party’s platform? Does he not agree with its principles or leadership? In this election, who and what does he represent besides himself?
