John died peacefully in Fergus, Ontario on Monday, May 11, 2026. Loving husband to Reverend Barbara Pettit (1941-2018) for 55 years. He is survived by his loving partner Diane Ronald and constant companion Tansy. He is also survived by his son Andrew (Susan) of Stoney Creek, his daughter Heather (Simon) Tinker of Burlington and his six grandchildren; David Turner, Erin (Darren), Megan Pettit, and James (Ashley), Adam, and Blake Tinker. He is also survived by his sister Jane Holland of Tecumseh, Ontario. John was a well-respected science educator who loved to teach inside and outside the classroom. He worked at the Halton School Board assisting with the science and math curriculum most of his career. John and Barbara were avid curlers at both the Burlington and Fergus curling clubs. He loved hiking the Bruce Trail with his lifelong friend Wayne Hillman. He enjoyed the outdoors including identifying wildflowers, gardening, and bird watching. He was always searching for the elusive Grey Breasted Gnat. He loved his Fergus community where he was blessed with wonderfully supportive neighbours and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026 from 1:30pm to 4:00pm at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David St. South, Fergus. Memorial donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home.
