Palmerston Lions to refurbish sports pad
MINTO – The Palmerston Lions Club is taking a $20,000 interest-free loan from Minto.
This money, which must be repaid by June 30, 2028, will help fund the refurbishing of the sports pad at the Palmerston Lions Heritage Park.
The pad was installed in 2000 and upgraded by Norwell District Secondary School students in 2010.
According to a town report, “the sports area is very well used by both students and residents and is a vital part of the park.
“Over the years, the surface has deteriorated and it is time for a refresh.”
The refurbishment project is expected to cost about $70,000 overall.
The work will be funded in part by a $29,000 donation from the Palmerston Homecoming committee, Palmerston Lions Club secretary Dave Wilson told council on April 7. The donation is the surplus proceeds from its event in August.
The refurbishment is also funded by grants from several other Palmerston organizations, including Blessings to You and the Palmerston Legion, as well as one private donation from a family in Palmerston.
The donations total $52,000, and the Lions Club is set to cover the remainder of the cost, Wilson said.
The reason the club needs a loan, he noted, is because it recently completed its $60,000 pledge towards the MRI machine at Palmerston hospital.
“So we need to build our kitty up a little bit,” Wilson said, adding the club doesn’t have any major fundraisers planned before fall and the hope is to complete the sports pad upgrades in time for people to enjoy over the summer.
Town treasurer Gordon Duff presented the request to council and said the Palmerston Lions Club has “always met its commitments before.”
