Palmerston cenotaph meeting on Jan. 27

A date is now set for a public meeting about the Palmerston cenotaph.

Mayor David Anderson said recently council had discussed holding  a meeting early in the new year to consider moving the cenotaph to the Palmerston Lions Heritage Park from its current site beside the library.

“We’ve nailed down the date for Jan. 27 at the Palmerston community centre at 7pm,” he said.

Anderson explained discussion will include a background of the issue and where it currently stands.

“We’re looking for public input.”

He said the meeting would also include discussion about a fundraiser for the project.

He hoped to get a few stone samples from Wingham Monuments for people to view.

“We’d like to get this out in the public and get as many people as we can to the meeting,” said Anderson.

Deputy-mayor Judy Dirksen asked if anyone local was contacted regarding the project.

Anderson said he tried to get in touch with a Harriston company previously, and would attempt to do so again.

However, he said there are only a couple of companies that can do the actual moving of the monument itself.
