Water superintendent Frank Smedley believes council’s message is clear on the Nestlé Waters proposal to renew a water taking permit for an additional 10 years.

Smedley told council he had recently met with representatives regarding the permit to take water. The meeting involved the town, Nestlé, the Ministry of Environment, the Grand River Conservation Authority. “A lot of issues were discussed, including those raised by the municipality,” he said.

“The bottom line is that the ministry has our comments and point of view.”

He said additional comments made during the meeting gave ministry staff a greater grasp of the issue everyone’s interests - from a technical standpoint.

He said it is the ministry that issues the permit.

“We’ve said our piece. Now it is up to them to look at everyone’s interests, weigh them, and issue a permit as they see fit.”

He said the municipality does not need to provide additional comments.

“The ones we sent are fine.”
